Percy Molland was born in 1886, the son of Richard and Bessie Ellen (Lawrence) Molland. Percy’s father was the wheelwright in Hollacombe and was able to give his children a better start in life than many other families in Winkleigh parish. Percy’s elder sister Blanche became a teaching assistant and Percy joined the Post Office. He was posted to Hungerford, where he was boarding in 1911 when his occupation is recorded as Sorting Clerk and Telegraphist. With his experience it would have been natural for him to be posted to a Signal Company within the Royal Engineers. His stay in Hungerford gave him the honour of being recorded on the Hungerford War Memorial as well as the Winkleigh Memorial Cross
The war history of Percy Molland is in preparation and will be avilable here soon.
